Spam thread
« on: January 24, 2018, 11:12:22 AM »
Hi everyone, we've recently had an abnormal influx of likely bot accounts, most of whom have been banned (though I'm okay with leaving their posts up for posterity, as long as they're not abusive or excessive... most of them are just bizarre, non-sequitur, and mildly comical). In some cases it's very hard to tell whether they're a bot or not, so I generally prefer to leave these unbanned unless I'm fairly certain. In the unlikely event that I have made an error and banned a legitimate user, please PM or email me.

Thanks to our other admin Agahnim for also monitoring likely spam accounts. If you disagree with my banhammer on any particular user you are welcomed to go ahead and unban them.

As the new registrations per hour has ramped up over the morning, I have temporarily disabled registration altogether until I can replace the captcha or figure out a better way of automating legitimate registrations.

In lieu of this, I will post a new sticky thread for newbies who want to join, directing them to email an admin for approval.

Okay, going to test opening registration again with new questions and a slightly harder captcha. Will close registration immediately if I get another spambot registration in the next new days.

My new registration questions and beefed-up captcha seem to be working, so I'm going to delete the "Want to join? Read first" thread shortly and leave registration open for now. Thanks for your patience and continue on as normal.
