Riot!

((Out of Character thread is here: OoC: Riot! ))

Dawm padded at a casual pace along a degraded trail, leaving faint two toed tracks in the moist earth. He kept a weary turquoise eye on the Tenontosaurus herd in the near distance as he moved, stopping infrequently to observe their numbers and behavior before continuing. Keeping this close to a herd with recently acquired hatchlings was risky business. The cows were highly unpredictable surrounded by so many vulnerable younglings, and so many predators willing to eat them. The threat of a thorough trampling if you just so much as looked at a chick wrong was no bluff, but numbers were in the Deinonychus's favor. With countless babies crowding about the cows were just as likely to trample one of their own accidentally than they were to beat him into the ground on purpose. The dark male raptor was counting on those numbers to provide his next meal.

There were also few abandoned nests to take advantage of, and it just so happens that's where Dawm is heading now. Even if there are no eggs or straggling babies to be found, there will certainly be lizards, small mammals and bugs. Especially bugs after this mornings rain, now that the sun was coming out from behind lazy, rolling grey clouds. Although Dawm would greatly prefer the bountiful fresh meat of a large kill to the minuscule tidbits scavenging provided, something was always better than nothing. He was no stranger to an empty stomach. You've got to take advantage of what you've got while you've got it.

He continued along at a brisk but comfortable trot, slowing slightly only to make his way through a tangle of lush ferns. He cast another look at the herd, and in his distraction was smacked in the face by something small and moving. He blinked in surprise and stopped immediately, whipping his muzzle in the direction of the tiny attack, only to be hit again on the other side. He shook his head and peered about, eyes instantly training hungrily on a gathering swarm of alates. He snapped rapidly at a few nearest him, stretching out and even hopping a little. His efforts were rewarded with meager success.

After some time, he paused his jumping about, bobbing and twisting his head to find the swarm's source. They came from a large termite mound not far away. Dawm headed eagerly in that direction, greedily snapping up what he could along the way. Multiple mounds had sprung to life with the reappearance of the sun over the flat lands. Termite alates rose in a patchy cloud on the horizon, inviting all that witnessed it to feast while they could. The opportunity would not last long.

At the mound he continued snatching insects from the air, the mound exterior, himself, and from the scarce surrounding vegetation. Often his strikes were unsuccessful, but the nutrients he was gaining from what few he managed to catch was undeniably worth the expended effort. He stopped feasting for a few moments to study the termite's home. It stretched toward the sky impressively, towering several feet above his head. Its shape was irregular and rounded at the top of pillars, but with a careful foot he thought it could make a handy perch. Everything was crawling from little holes along the outside, top to bottom. He watched the alates and soldiers move about for a short time before happily returning to licking them off the mound in great number. The soldiers often bit his tongue savagely, and although it was very uncomfortable, Dawm found it to be an acceptable price for such an easy meal.

When licking and snatching proved not to be enough, be began attempting to excavate the mound. He clawed the tiny holes with his sharp foretalons, often taking away sizable chunks of earth at a time, all the while licking up what he could get. He was unaware the destruction was bringing forth more soldiers that were beginning to craw up his legs and over his arms, searching for tender areas to bite. He was completely focused on gobbling up the helpless soft-bodied worker termites that readily came forth to try and repair the damage he was making. This was just too good to pass up. A few bites were nothing, right?

Zayna rolled lazily to her feet, giving her neck and tail a slow shake to rid herself of the dust her scales picked up while resting in the dried up stream bed. She had wandered quite far from her usual lair, a medium sized cavern just big enough for an Acrocanthosaurus and a choice carcass to fit in. The large theropod had grown bored of it rather quickly: its location, though secluded, was not close enough to a prey source for her liking. Other carnivores, which she had a fondness for observing, and interacting with if the opportunity was presented, were few and far between. For most Acros, other predators meant competition. But to Zayna, as long as they weren't other Acrocanthosaurs, they were harmless enough. The only thing she really had to fear, other than her own species, was a pack of Utahraptors, for whom it was not unusual to see driving larger predators out of their territory. Depending on the size of the pack, they would at times leave at the very scent of an Acrocanthosaurus. This was fortunate for Zayna, since she was always on the lookout for new hunting grounds. Keeping to the old territories were never good enough for her: eventually another of her kind, or a large Utahraptor pack, would challenge her for the territory. Hating conflict, the rather small Acro preferred to move along constantly rather than face even one intimidating encounter. (Of which she had a fair share in the past.)

Once she found a new territory, she would wait. And wait. And wait. Until the lazy female grew bored of it and sought out something new.

Today was one of the latter. She blinked, green lids sliding slowly over her golden eyes. Raising her head up, her nostrils flared as she tested the air. Sniifff! With a noisy inhale, Zayna picked up a new scent: that of a male Deinonychus. The smaller predators were pretty common, but interesting to watch nonetheless, when the rare opportunity presented itself. Not only that, but more importantly, they usually led to food sources. Paying keen attention to the noises of the forest, her ears caught on to the familiar deep rumble of a Tenontosaurus herd moving perhaps a half a mile away. Though not particularly hungry, Zayna knew that food could always be scarce. You never knew when you would get your next meal, so better not take chances.

Following the same degraded trail, and eventually noticing the prints of the smaller carnivore about halfway to the herd, Zayna continued on. Her footfalls weren't especially noisy, though her foot would crack the occasional branch or clod of dirt beneath her. She'd have to be much more cautious as she came closer to the Tenontosaurus herd, but she doubted they could sense her at this distance. Whether or not the smaller Deinonychus would sense her approach would have to be seen.

(I am, but I have a feeling that we'd need more participants to make this an interesting RP. ^^; I'd love to write more for Zayna though. *loves her poor neglected Acro character* :> )

It is a new knowledge for me and I believe that everyone who has read this content must get something that is not very useful, certainly.
